Majority of young people in Peterborough prefer social media over conventional media

Peterborough Youth Council members undertook an annonymous survey of young people aged 11-19 between July and September 2011 for those who either lived or were being educated/trained or employed in Peterborough.
One of the questions posed to them was:
Q: How would you like to get information or advice or find out about services and activities for young people?
The results were as follows:
Website updates – 21%
Facebook – 73%
Twitter – 18%
Directly via phone or text – 18%
Local media radio/newspaper/magazines – 22%
In person schools/college/Connexions/other – 18%
Commenting on the findings, Lib Dem councillor, Darren Fower, who attended the latest Youth Council meeting said:
“The survey results show that the need for the City Council to embrace social media is essential if we are to truly attempt to connect with young people in Peterborough.
“Local media like the Evening Telegraph are already making use of Facebook and Twitter very well, but the City Council are still, in many peoples eyes, dragging their feet, for example they still have no official Facebook page?
“Given the efficient costs of using social media, and the fact that many young people are proficient in using it, shows that, sadly once again, the local authority are behind schedule”
A total of 304 responses were received to the Youth Councils Survey!
